Alloway

Andrus

Baker

Baldwin

Arms: Argent six oak leaves, 3, 2, 1, Vert stalked Sable their points downward. Crest: a squirrel sejant Or. Motto: Vim vi repello. Source: Crozier: Richard Baldwin, of Milford, Connecticut, 1635.

Arms: Argent a chevron Ermine between three hazel springs Vert. Crest: a squirrel sejant.

Can quarter Clinton, et al.

Beaumont, of Whitley Beaumont, co. Yorks.

Arms: Gules a lion rampant Argent langued and armed Azure within an orle of nine crescents of the second. Crest: A bull’s head erased, quarterly Argent and Gules. Motto: Fide sed cui vide (Trust, but mind whom you trust). Perhaps related to Beamont of Crosland. The Beaumonts of West Yorkshire were tenants of the de Lacy honor of Pontefract.

de Burgh, of Ulster

Arms: Or a cross Gules.

Burke

Arms: Or a cross Gules and on a canton a lion rampant Sable.

Butler

Arms: Argent three covered cups in bed between two bendlets engrailed Sable. Crest: A demi-cockatrice couped Vert combed beaked wattled and ducally gorged Or. Motto: Liberte toute entiere. Source: Crozier.

Costner (Kestner)

Adam Kestner (?-1767) – Arms: Argent a box with the lid open Gules. Crest: A pair of wings the dexter Argent and the sinister Gules. Source: Adam Kestner, 1748 from Rotterdam to America. His daughter Margaret (1745-?) married Lt. John Hoyle.

Crossland, of Crosland Hill, co. Yorks

Daggett

Dennis, of Pucklechurch, Gloucester

Durand

Dr. John Durand – Arms: Sable a fess dancetty Or and in chief three fleurs-de-lis of the second. Crest: A griffin’s head erased pierced with a spear proper. Ridge Durand – Arms: Sable a fess dancetty Or and in chief three fleurs-de-lis of the second, differenced by a label of three points of the second. Duwall

Arms: Quarterly: 1st Gules a lion rampant Or; 2nd Azure a dexter hand couped Argent holding [an object]; 3rd Or a three-masted galley Sable in full sail; 4th Argent two salmons naiant in pale Proper. Crest: [a bird] rising. Source: Adelsvapen, Duwall No. 241. Formerly MacDougall of Mackerstone, naturalized in Sweden 1638. Supposed ancestors of the Wåhlstrand family.

Eagle

Ridge Durand aka Wind River Eagle (1933-2002) – Arms: Argent an American bald eagle close proper upon on a branch from which depends four feathers Gules, Argent, Vert and Or, and in chief sinister four pairs of feathers each pair one Gules tipped Sable and one Or tipped Sable conjoined in chief at their quills by four hurts. Source: War shield (1973).

England

Arms: Quarterly, 1st and 4th Azure semy de lis Or (for France), 2nd and 3rd Gules three lions passant guardant (for England) overall a label of three point on each point a canton Gules Source: Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence who married the heiress of de Burgh of Ulster.

Ferre

Arms: Argent, two lions rampant in pale Gules. Crest: a plow Proper (silver with red handles). Source: Ferre or Feret, Normandy.

Arms: Argent a cross Gules between four fer-de-molines Sable. A pun on the surname: fer means “iron.”

Guy Ferre (d.1323) – Arms: Gules a cross moline Argent debruised by a bendlet Azure. Source: Segar’s Roll, No. 111 (c1282).

Foran

Arms: Azure two flanches Argent three roses in fess Counterchanged and in the base of each flanche a bird. Motto: Lucrum Christi Mihi (To Me Christ is Gain).

Frame

Arms: Argent on a cross Gules three lions Or, a chief Gules.

Gallop

Arms: Gules, on a bend Or a lion passant guardant Sable. Crest: a demi-lion Or and Sable, holding in his dexter paw a broken arrow Gules. Motto: Be Bolde, Be Wyse.

Gledhill

Arms: Azure three lozenges in fesse Argent. Crest: A cock proper. Motto: Fortiter et Recte (Bravely and Rightly). Source: Burke’s General Armory (1884): Gledhill of Barkisland, Halifax, granted by St. George Norroy, 1612, confirmed by Segar, Garter, 1632 (arms only).

Glendinning (Clendennin)

Arms: Quarterly Argent and Sable, a cross parted per cross indented countercharged. Crest: A maunch Or upon the point of a sword. Motto: Have Faith in Christ.

Grant of Freuchie

Arms: Gules three antique crowns Or. Crest: A burning hill proper. Supporters: Two savages proper. Motto: Stand Fast. The hill depicted in the crest is Craigeleachie (opposite Rothemurchus), where a fire was lighted to call the clan together in Strathspey, the seat of the Grants in Morayshire.

Gunn of Gunn

Arms: Argent a galley of three masts sails furled and oars in action Sable, displaying at the mast-head flags gules within a bordure Azure, on a chief of the third a bear’s head of the first muzzled of the second between two mullets of the field. Crest: A dexter arm wielding a broadsword, proper. Motto: Aut pax aut bellum (Either peace or war). These arms are commonly assigned to Gunn, but no arms have been matriculated in Lyon Register.

Hamilton

Arms: Gules three cinquefoils Ermine.

Harlakenden

Arms: Azure a fess Ermine between three lions heads erased Or. Crest: Between the attires of a stag Or an eagle regardant wings extended Argent. Source: America Heraldica. These arms depend on a doubtful descent, from Samuel Symonds who removed 1630 to Ipswich. If descent is correct, can quarter with Symonds.

von Habsburg

Arms: Or a lion rampant Gules crowned Azure.

Hauri, of Beromünster

Arms: Azure a dove rising wings elevated and displayed Argent beaked and membered Gules. Crest: A dove as in the arms. Source: Stift Beromünster, Liber Vitae (circa 1415), arms of an unknown Hauri, probably either Johann Hauri, Bailiff (Vogt) of Beromünster from 1411, or his first cousin Jacob Hauri, a Canon of Beromünster who served as a judge of the court of lower jurisdiction at Ludigen in 1415.

Justin Howery – Arms: Azure a dove roussant Argent beaked and membered Or, on a chief Argent three chaplets of roses Gules leaved Vert. Crest: A pair of wings conjoined in lure each charged with a rose Gules. Motto: Hora e Semper (Now and Always). Hauri, of Reinach

Arms: Azure a dove rising wings elevated and displayed upon a trimount Vert and in chief two mill rinds addorsed Argent. Crest: A dove as in the arms. Supporters: two bears passant proper. Source: Carving above the door at Schneggen, in Reinach.

Kenney

Arms: Per pale Or and Azure a fleur-de-lis counterchanged between three crescents.

Kenney, of Somerset

Arms: Ermine (sometimes Argent) three crescents Gules. Crest: A unicorn’s head Azure bezanty maned Or, horned of the last and Sable. Motto: “Tereat, luceat, foreat” (Let him hold, shine, and flourish). Source: Burke’s Heraldry (1844) for Kenney, of Somerset.

Lewes, of Llysnewydd

Arms: Gules three serpents conjoined in triangle Argent. Crest: An eagle displayed with a serpent embowed round the body proper. Motto: Sine dolo (Without Sorrow). Lewknor

Arms: Azure three chevronels Argent.

Luce

Arms: Azure a cresent Argent. Crest: An eagle regardant wings displayed holding in the dexter claw a sword erect, all proper. Source: Burke’s General Armory (1884) for Luce and Lucy, of London (formerly of Antwerp) and Jersey. Attributed to Henry Luce, the American immigrant, probably erroneously.

Lynde

Arms: Gules on a chief Or three tau crosses Gules. Crest: a demi-griffin segreant holding a tau cross of the shield. Of doubtful relationship but see America Heraldica.

MacDowall of Garthland

Arms: Azure a lion rampant Argent crowned of a ducal coronet Or. Crest: Issuant from a crest-coronet Or, a lion’s paw erased and erected proper holding a dagger point upwards proper hilted and pommelled Or. Motto: Vincere vel mori (To conquer or die). Arms of the ancient province of Galloway, differenced by the addition of a coronet.

Mallory

Arms: Quarterly, 1st Or a lion rampant Gules double queued, ducally gorged Argent (for Mallory), 2nd Sable an eagle displayed Or (for Nonwycke), 3rd Argent a bend between six martletts (for Tempest), 4th Azure two bars and in chief three mullets pierced Argent (for Washington). MacMurrough

Arms: Gules a lion rampant Argent.

McKenna

Arms: Vert a fess argent between three lions’ heads affrontée Or. Crest: A salmon naiant proper. The Kenney family of Augusta County, Virginia were probably McKennas.

Mayhew, of Chilmark

Arms: Argent on a chevron Sable between three sea mews Sable five lozenges Argent.

Middleton

Arthur Middleton (1742-1787), signer of the Declaration of Independence – Arms: Argent fretty Sable, a canton of the second. Crest: A sheaf of wheat proper between two wings conjoined in lure Argent. Murphy (Muskerry)

Arms: Quarterly Argent and Gules on a fess Sable between four lions rampant Counterchanged three garbs Or.

Murphy (O Morchoe)

Arms: Argent an apple tree eradicated fructed Proper on a chief Vert a lion passant Or. Crest: On a chapeau Gules turned up Ermine a lion rampant Gules holding between the paws a garb Or. Motto: Vincere vil mori.

Norton

Arms: Gules a fret Argent over all a bend Vaire (Or and Gules). Crest: a griffin sejant Proper winged Gules beaked and membered Or. Source: Seal on the will of Rev. John Norton, 1663. He settled at Ipswich and succeeded Cotton Mather at Boston. Also, engraved on a tankard given to Mrs. Elizabeth Quincy, daughter of Rev. John Norton, of Hingham, Massachusetts, to her daughter Lucy Tufts. In the 1st Church, Quincy, Massachusetts, the tankard has a bend Argent and Azure

O’Connell

Arms: Argent a lion rampant Gules langued and armed Azure.

Arms: Per fess Argent and Vert a stag trippant Proper between three trefoils slipped Counterchanged.

Otis

Arms: Argent a saltire engrailed between four cross crosslets fitchee Azure. Crest: an arm embowed vested Gules the hand Proper holding a branch of laurel. Source: America Heraldica.

Place, of Halnaby

Arms: Quarterly, 1st Azure on a chief Argent three chaplets Gules (for Place of Dinsdale, co. Durham), 2nd Per pale Or and Gules a lion passant guardant Counterchanged (for Stapleton of Flamborough), 3rd Gules three chevrons Or (for Slitholme), 4th Argent a fess between six fleurs-de-lis Sable (for Halnath of Halnaby, co. Richmond). Crest: Issuant from a ducal coronet Or a dexter arm embowed in armor holding in the hand a battle ax all proper. Source: Visitation of Durham (1595).

The Places of Halnaby exhibited the arms of the Barons Plaiz at one of the Visitations, but their claim was denied. They were allowed these arms, which are apparently based on those of Lascelles.

Playce, of Halnaby, co. Durham

Arms: Azure on a chief Argent three torteaux each charged with a cinquefoil Or. Source: Burke’s General Armory (1884).

Plays

Arms: Azure on a chief Argent three chaplets Gules. Source: Morant’s Additions to Burke (Sir William Plays), citing Glovers Ordinary. Meggison of Whalton, co. Northumberland, and John Cressoner had similar arms.

Carroll Arthur Place (1920-2001) – Arms: Azure on a chief Argent three chaplets of roses Gules leaved Vert. Crest: Issuant from a crest-coronet Or a pair of wings conjoined in lure each charged with a rose Gules. Motto: Rosam Qui Meruit Ferat (Let the One Who Has Earned It Bear the Rose). Plecy, Earl of Warwick

Arms: Argent six annulets Gules a chief chequey Or and Sable. Source: Burke’s General Armory.

Plowden, Earl of Albion

Arms: Azure a fess dancetty the upper points terminating in fleurs-de-lis Or. Crest: On a mount Vert a buck stanant Sable attired Or. Motto: Tibi Hoc Alteri.

Quarmby, of Quarmby, co. Yorks.

Arms: Argent two bars and in chief a Cornish chough proper. Crest: No crest or motto recorded. Source: Visitation of Yorkshire (1567). No details are given in the 1563, 1584, or 1612 Visitations of Yorkshire. See also Justin Durand, The Augustan Society Roll of Arms (1983). These are canting arms; a Cornish chough is also called a “corbie.” The Quarmby family had early alliances with Beaumont of Crossland and Copley of Balley. The Aglionbys, apparently a related family, bore similar arms. In the time of Edward II, John Aglomby bore Argent two bars and in chief three martlets Sable.

Quillen (MacQuillen) of the Route, co. Antrim

Arms: Gules a lion rampant Argent, a chief Or. Crest: a demi-dragon Azure.

Arms: Or a lion rampant Gules headed Azure. An old legend claims the von Reinach family were cadets of the von Habsburg family, based on the similarity of their arms. The similarity probably shows only the von Reinach family were vassals of the von Habsburgs.

Robertson of Struan

Arms: Gules three wolves’ heads erased Argent armed and langued Azure. Crest: A dexter arm and had erect holding a regal crown all proper. Supporters: Dexter, a serpent; Sinister, a dove, the heads of each encircled with rays. Compartment: A wild man chained. Motto: Virtutis Gloria Merces (Glory is the Reward of Valor). Slogan: Garg’n uair dhuisgear (The Hour of Awakening is Approaching). Badges: Dluth Fhraoch (Fine-leaved Heath), An Raineach mhor (Bracken)

Shaw of Tordarroch

Arms: Quarterly, 1st Or a lion rampant Gules armed and langued Azure; 2nd Argent a fir-tree growing out of a mound in base seeded proper, in the dexter canton a dexter hand couped at the wrist holding a dagger point downwards Gules; 3rd chequy Argent and Azure, and on a chief of the Second three mullets of the First; 4th Or a galley sails furled Azure flagged Gules oars in saltire of the Last. Crest: A dexter cubit arm couped and holding a dagger erect all proper. Motto: Fide et fortitudine (By faith and fortitude).

Straumey

Arms: Argent a vine branch Vert leaved of the same and fructed Azure. Source: Justin Durand, assumed 1981. The Saga of the Greenlanders says Straumey is located at the mouth of a fjord (Straumfiord). Banks identifies it with Martha’s Vineyard, but other authorities identify it with Belle Isle. The grapes are a play on both “Martha’s Vineyard” and on the Norse “Vinland.”

Sutton

Arms: Argent on a chevron between three armulets Gules as many crescents Or. Crest: A greyhound’s head couped ermine collared Gules garnished and ringed Or, on the collar three armulets of the last.

Symonds

Arms: Azure a chevron engrailed between three trefoils slipped Or. Crest: Issuant from a mural coronet chequey Argent and Azure a boars head of the first crined Sable. Motto: Moriendo Vive. Source: America Heraldica. If descended from Samuel Symonds, 1630 to Ipswich, then quarter with Harlakenden.

Swanström

Martin Swanstrom (1888-1959) – Arms: Azure two bars wavy Argent between three swans rising Argent beaked and membered Or, wings elevated and addorsed. Justin Swanstrom – Arms: Azure two bars wavy Argent between three swans rising wings elevated and addorsed Argent beaked and membered Or. Hugo Svanström (1886-1971) – Arms: Azure, two bars wavy Argent between three swans rising of the second, beaked and membered Or. Crest: Issuant from a crest coronet Or, a demi-swan as in the arms. Shirley Jean Swanström (1936-2025) – Arms: Azure a fess wavy Argent charged with a bar wavy Azure between three swans passant Argent, beaks, feet and tail ends Or, two in chief and one in base. Justin Swanstrom – Arns: Azure, two bars wavy Argent, between three swans rising, wings elevated and addorsed of the second, beaked and membered Or, placed two and one. Crest: Issuant from a crest coronet Or, a pair of wings conjoined in lure Argent, each charged with a rose Gules. Motto: Be Just and Fear Not. Shirley Jean Swanstrom (1936-2025) – Arms: Azure, a fess wavy Argent charged with a bar wavy Azure between three swans passant Argent, beaks, feet, and tail ends Or, two in chief and one in base. Hugo Svanström (1886-1971) – Arms: Azure, two bars wavy Argent between three swans rising of the second, beaked and membered Or. Crest: Issuant from a crest coronet Or a demi-swan as in the arms. Justin Swanstrom – Arms: Azure, two bars wavy Argent between three swans rising, wings elevated and addorsed of the second, beaked and membered Or, placed two and one.
