This should be required reading for every genealogist. It’s from a symposium at the Smithsonian – Quantum Leap: Does “Indian Blood” Still Matter?

“Blood quantum—originating from archaic notions of biological race and still codified in contemporary policy—remains one of the most important factors in determining tribal citizenship, access to services, and community recognition.“

Really, though, it’s a compelling exploration of the intersection of genealogy, biology and culture.
